China Takes the Lead in Wind Power Installed Capacity
02 March 2011
windpowerThe Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) has recently published the data analysis of the global wind power capacity for 2010.

Despite a slight fall in respect to figures in 2009 (35.8 GW installed in 2010 as opposed to 38,6 GW in the previous year) the total installed capacity increased by 22,5%. This result is mainly due to China's performance, which created up to nearly half of the new installed capacity. In fact, it was able to add 16.5 GW to reach a total installed capacity of 42,3 GW, thus overcoming the USA. With plenty of new projects planned and others already under construction, China should not find it a challenge to achieve the goal of 200 GW by 2020.

Traditional wind power markets experienced a decline, a drop of 50% in the USA (from 10GW in 2009 to 5GW in 2010) and 7.5% in the EU, which can be mainly attributed to the financial crisis. At the same time, positive results came from new markets in Latin America and North Africa.

More in depth information and data can be found at GWEC website.
