Energy Saving For Computers: Standby Mode & Software
25 March 2011

B-energy_saving_gearboxesWhen we speak about energy efficiency we always complain about the consumption of electronic devices whilst on standby mode. Indeed, this type of consumption is significant and is behind the project called Selina (Standby and Off-Mode Energy Losses in New Appliances Measured in Shops). The main strategic objective of the project is the market transformation leading to a substantial reduction of standby and off-mode consumption. In the long term, another goal is to produce a Guidelines Leaflet including advice on purchasing and operating equipment. The project aims to help the design of future new policies which enforce limitations on standby and off-mode equipment consumption. Improving awareness is not an isolated effort: the same approach is also supported by new software, in particular, one example is the "Energy Saver ECO" software. It allows a saving of up to 40% of consumption by adapting the computer power according to the running software. When the computer is not in use it goes automatically in to standby mode without damaging data. It is also possible to check the amount of saved energy. The combination of research and market solutions can make the energy efficiency concept a possible step for everybody.
