Linköping Biogas Plant

biogas-powered-train-swedenLinköping has been linked to biogas production from the mid 1990's. The Swedish Biogas plant started in 1995, treating organic industrial waste and now a total of 30 different substrates are processed which can be divided in slaughterhouse waste and waste from the food industry (waste fat, vegetable waste etc.) all of which require sanitation.

The biogas is used for light duty vehicles (private cars, taxis and distribution vehicles), for tracks and also urban city buses. Biogas used as fuel in vehicles, needs to be cleaned of carbon dioxide and must be composed of at least 95% of methane. Every year the plant produces 4.7 million m3 of upgraded biogas.

From 2005, the Linköping Biogas plant also provides fuel for the world's first Biogas train for its route from Linköping and Västervik on the East Coast of Sweden. With this system not only are the CO2 emissions from urban transport decreased, but also the local dust, sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions are significantly decreased.
