2009 State of the World Report
14 January 2009
The 2009 State of the World report from the Worldwatch Institute will be presented on January 15 in Washington DC.

This year edition's subtitle is "Into A Warming World", since the contents are largely based on the findings of the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which later last year clearly stated that "warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global average sea level.".

The State of the World 2009 report contains detailed analyses of the global situation and aims at providing directions for concrete undertakings. The strong message that it wants to convey is that if the world does not take action early and in adequate measure, the impacts of climate change could prove extremely harmful and overwhelm our capacity to adapt.
At the same time, it underlines how the costs and feasibility of mitigation of GHG emissions are well within our reach and can carry substantial benefits for many sections of society. For this reason it is essential for the world to look beyond business as usual and prevent the crisis that faces us if we fail to act.
