Beijing Sets New Targets for PM 2.5 Reduction
10 February 2014

beijing-pm2.5As the Beijing's air pollution conditions have not improved during the last year, at the end of January the Municipal government passed a new regulation to curb emissions, with particular emphasis on PM 2.5.

The current level of PM 2.5 set by the national law is 35 micrograms per cubic meter, while the capital city's concentration is more than double, reaching 89.5 micrograms. This situation has already caused many problems for the city's quality of life, especially regarding the health of the citizens, and has therefore gained a high relevance in the Government's decisions.
The goal of the Air Pollution Prevention Regulation, which will come into effect in March, is the reduction of the PM 2.5 level to an average of 60 micrograms by 2017. To do so penalties for polluters have been toughened as to make companies' profit from pollution less rewarding and therefore not worthwhile. At the same time the city's traffic department is required to set up a limitation to the number of vehicles in the city following the provisions in the dust prevention section of the regulation.
In addition to Government's efforts in implementation and supervision, public is encouraged to be involved and report unlawful behaviors.
