Biodiesel Buses in Verbania
27 June 2013

Verbania-busSpeaking about sustainable transport there are many good alternatives to be considered and there are very often discussions about which can be the best choice. Looking at biodiesel, for sure it has many positive aspects, among which: the reduction of the forganic waste fraction to be treated and the decrease of fossil fuel use.

A good example and a concrete application of this solution was introduced in Verbania (Piemonte Region, Italy), where the public transport company decided to use this technology. The entire public bus fleet currently uses biofuel obtained from the organic fraction coming from the local separate collection of waste.

Verbania has reached 63% of separate collection of the municipal solid waste, and 12% of it is organic waste. Nearly 12,000 tons per year of organic material are therefore available for the two-years pilot project, which aims to test this alternative way to reuse the organic fraction of waste.

If the results are good enough, the production of biofuel will become a systematic production, and not only the public busses, but also the waste collection vehicles will use it.

Another interesting aspect is that the biofuel( from organic waste into bio-oil and then into green diesel) will be produced in a plant built in Verbania city, closing the biofuel life cycle in the same area.
