China Plans New Measures to Reduce Air Pollution
13 September 2013

chinasmogThe Chinese Government has recently announced a plan to cut air pollution, which early this year has caused hazardous smog concentrations in the northern part of the country and led to severe respiratory problems for the population.
The main cause seems to have been identified with the heavy use of coal in energy production, which last year amounted to 66,8% of the total primary energy use. The plan has therefore set to a goal to lower this figure down to at least 65% by 2017. In order to reach it the plan provides for the closure of old and polluting industries such as steel mills, cement factories and aluminum smelters. Moreover all the construction works for unapproved projects in these industries will be halted and new thermal power plants in key industrial areas won't be approved anymore.
Other actions planned include: nuclear capacity increase from the current 12.5 GW to 50 GW by 2017; extra 150 billion cubic meters of natural gas pipeline capacity to serve especially the northern industrial areas (Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region); support for the implementation of new automobile fuel standards.
All of the measures are expected to have a reduction of 10% of breathable suspended particles with a diameter of 10 microns (PM10) or less by 2017 as a result.
