China Strives to Reduce Energy Intensity
13 March 2015

energy_intensityThe National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) annual report published on March 5, said that China will implement policies aimed at reducing coal consumption and controlling the number of energy-intensive projects in polluted regions, in an effort to reduce damaging pollution as well as cut the economy's energy intensity.

The government plans to cut the country's energy intensity, which is the amount of energy used per unit of GDP growth, by 3.1 % in 2015, compared with the 4.8 % registered in 2014.

Among the measure to reduce pollution there is the plan to increase wind power capacity to 200 gigawatts (GW) and solar to around 100 GW by 2020, up from 95.8 GW and 26.5 GW respectively at the end of 2014. The country is also aiming to raise natural gas production to more than 245 billion m3a year by 2020, up from the 2013 value of 161.6 billion m3. At the same time coal use should be reduced below 65 % of total primary energy consumption by 2017.
