EU to Ban Incandescent Light Bulbs
10 December 2008
In the Frame of the Energy Efficiency Package A European regulation progressively phasing out incandescent bulbs from 2009 through 2012, was endorsed by the EU Member States experts of the Eco-Design Regulatory Committee on December 8, 2008, in the frame of the Energy Efficiency Package Europe recently agreed on.

By switching to energy saving bulbs, EU citizens will save close to 40 TWh (roughly the electricity consumption of 11 million European households, or the equivalent of the yearly output of 10 power stations of 500 megawatts), which will lead to a reduction of about 15 million tons of CO2 emission per year.
Besides this positive environmental impact, also economical benefits should result from this transition. The new technology grants in fact that light bulbs will last approximately five times longer than before with an efficiency gain reaching 25% - 30%: considering both lower bills and the reduced ecological footprint, the initial investment (new light bulbs are in average from 2 to 20 times more expensive than incandescent ones) should profit 15 times its cost per year."
