IPCC Publishes the Working Group II Contribution to the AR5
31 March 2014

AR5cover1On March 30th the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published the Working Group II contribution to its Fifth Assessment Report. This second part of the Report, drafted by 309 scientists from 70 countries, pinpoints "Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability" linked to climate change, while the first part, published on September 2013 focused on "The Physical Science Basis".

In the WGII AR5 Final Draft, available at this link, the IPCC confirms the scientific evidence on the impacts of global warming, which is now even more clear compared to the last report issued in 2007. Both current and future impacts on natural and human systems are included, showing how the entire world will bear the consequences if no action is taken. Higher risk and frequency of extreme events (air pollution, heatwaves, droughts, heavy rainfall, water shortages) are predicted for different areas of the planet, with possible repercussions on social stability as well as very high economic loss. The impacts on the natural system include an increasing extinction rate for both flora and fauna, with marine animals deeply affected by ocean acidification.

The third and last part of the Report, focusing on "Mitigation of Climate Change" will be presented for discussion in Berlin and published on April 13.
