More Sustainable Fishing Activities Thanks to Biodegradable Boxes
09 January 2015

cassette_pescePolypla is a new biodegradable compound produced in Holland, which could provide a solution to many environmental problems related to the use of polystyrene boxes in the fishing industry. More than 10 million of boxes are used annually in Italy to store and transport fish: after being used they have to be disposed of as undifferentiated waste and often end up in the sea littering the coastline and causing damage to the sea life.

As a first step towards a higher level of sustainability, a fishermen cooperative in San Benedetto del Tronto (central Italy) recently started using 200 boxes made of Polypla. The cost of these boxes is higher than the polystyrene ones, but they can be recycled and, more importantly, they can naturally be degraded if lost at sea.

This pilot project was developed within the European Fisheries Fund (2007-2013) with the support of the consultancy company Green Evolution dept. R&D.
