Renewable Energy Industry Can Deliver More Than 20%
02 December 2008
EREC Technology Roadmap 2020 Launched The ambitious target set by the European Union of 20% of the total final energy consumption to be given by renewable energies by 2020 is not only achievable but can most probably be reached with some margin. This is what the European Renewable Energy Council stated in the document “Renewable Energy Technology Roadmap 20% by 2020”, published last November and based on the growth scenarios of the various energy sources.

According to this research, the contribution of RES in Europe by 2020 could reach a share from 20.9% to 22.8%. The most promising technologies are wind and solar energy, geothermal and energy from biomasses. The growing renewables sector will potentially employ up to 2 million people.
However, to reach this target further legislative measures will be needed to give strength to the industrial sector, like the new directive on renewable energy which is still under discussion.

According to renewable energy producers it is no longer possible to use the financial crisis as an excuse. Moving towards sustainable energy supplies can in fact be a big opportunity and create wealth for Italy and for Europe with new and innovative technologies in opposition to the protectionist policy of traditional sectors."
