The "Green Oil" Project
21 August 2009
New Biorefinery at the Scientific and Technological Park of Venice VEGA, the Scientific and Technological Park of Venice, is about to host the pilot plant of the first biorefinery in Italy. Construction will start next September in Porto Marghera, where disused industrial areas are already under reclamation.

The project is named "Green Oil" and will be coordinated by three Universities from Northern Italy (Venice, Padua and Udine) and supported by the Veneto Region and by 24 companies belonging to the METAS group, the Venetian Cluster of Environment for Sustainable Development.
The Green Oil project will exploit the great technological potential of both universities and firms of North-East Italy, with the aim of obtaining high quality organic products from sources not in competition with the food supply chain, and guaranteeing environmental sustainability at the same time.

The bio refinery will in fact produce various organic substances starting from the scraps of the food industry and of agricultural processes (marc, olive and diary residues, algae, etc.).
From a wide range of biomasses will therefore come organic oils useful to produce biofuels or other organic compounds to be used as preservatives and antioxidants for the pharmaceutical or food industry.

The production phase is expected to start at the beginning of 2010."
