New Biogas Urban Network for Energy Supply
18 June 2009
An Innovative Solution to be Experimented in Germany The town of Lünen, North Western Germany, will soon receive the 30 to 40% of the energy supply it needs (heating included) from an innovative dedicated network completely fuelled with biogas.

The project, which should be completed by December 2009, features a central biogas digester fed with various kinds of biodegradable materials such as animal residues, crop waste, and other biomasses. These materials produce methane and CO2 by fermentation.
The innovation is that the methane thus produced will be pumped into a biogas pipeline network and taken to 12 strategically-distributed CHP (Combined Heat and Power) units. These will burn the gas and produce both electricity to be fed into the grid, and heat to be distributed through the existing district heating network.

When operating, the plant should produce up to 6.8MW, enough energy to supply 26,000 houses with heat and electricity."
