Towards Energy Self-Sufficiency and CO2 Reduction
29 June 2009
A Brilliant Example of Local Action In 2006, the village of Fintry, Scotland, was informed that a wind farm would be built in their municipal territory. Instead of opposing the project, as most local communities often do, the village asked West Coast Energy to have an additional turbine built, in order to buy it and exploit its revenues.

The wind farm was completed and activated in 2008 and this year the village got their first earnings. After paying off the loan mortgage and maintenance costs in fact, the profits made from selling the electricity to the grid go to the community, which decided to reinvest them immediately for the improvement of the energy efficiency of the village.

For this reason the Fintry Development Trust was created to manage the incomes and carry out research on the energy needs of the village households, in order to identify the priorities that need to be worked on.
The Trust aims also at publicising its experience and leading the way for other communities willing to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels and their CO2 emissions.
