International Day of Climate Action
29 October 2009
October 24, 2009 The International Day of Climate Action was held on October 24, 2009.
In 181 countries people came together giving birth to over 5200 events around the world. Gathering in hundreds of iconic places - from the Taj Mahal to the Great Barrier Reef - people called for strong action and bold leadership on the climate crisis.

The event was organized and coordinated by 350.org, an international initiative aiming at building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis.
2009 was chosen because it could be a crucial year for this environmental issue, since next December world leaders will meet in Copenhagen to craft a new global treaty on cutting emissions.
The message from people all around the world was that the solutions to climate change must be equitable and grounded in science.

The focus of the action was on number 350 which scientists have identified as the safe upper limit, in parts per million, for CO2 in our atmosphere. The current concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is close to 390 ppm. The International Day of Climate Action was therefore intended as a call to world leaders to act decidedly against climate change and put stricter limits to CO2 emissions.
