The 10th International Conference on Walking and Liveable Communities
07 October 2009
NYC, U.S.A. October 7-9, 2009 New York City is hosting the 2009 edition of Walk21, the annual international walking conference. The conference takes place at the New York University in Manhattan's Greenwich Village from today, October 7, to Friday October 9, and is hosted by the New York City Department of Transportation.
"We aim to make Walk21 2009 an inspiring and powerful global gathering of the best urban planners, leaders and visionaries, and a major contribution to the worldwide effort to achieve sustainable cities for people," said Janette Sadik-Khan, New York City Transportation Commissioner.

The mayor of NYC Michael Bloomberg has begun a long-range sustainability campaign which has led to new transportation strategies in the city. New plazas and attractive sidewalks, rapid bus lines and protected bicycle lanes are blooming. City agencies are developing a new street design manual that will ensure that all future projects yield attractive, walking-friendly streets. In general, a wide range of green mobility and public realm projects and policies have been launched, all of which contribute to and require a high-quality pedestrian environment and might be applied to other cities willing to make their centers more sustainable and enjoyable for citizens."
