The First Bicycle Day!
27 April 2010
Italy. May 9, 2010 Bicycle is definitely the first means of transport since childhood and its role is nowadays crucial for urban sustainability all over the world.
The aim of Bicycle Day, now ready to celebrate its first edition (hopefully the first of a long series), is to demonstrate that a sustainable and friendly mobility is possible and feasible. The initiative is part of the Italian Ministry’s policies to promote urban sustainability, which started with the allocation of funds and incentives for buying electric and motor bicycles. Another relevant point of the Ministry’s policies is the call that is going to be published soon, which aims at devoting 14 million Euros to Municipalities willing to create bike-sharing projects linked to recharge systems from renewable energies.

Bicycle Day will help citizens discover their city or, more simply, will let them know their neighbourhood better without caring about traffic jams, car pollution and stress.
This is also a good chance for local governments. In cooperation with Associazione Nazionale Comuni Italiani and Associazione Nazionale Ciclo Motociclo Accessori, IMELS in fact launched a competition as one of the initiatives of Bicycle Day, called “Bicity”, that will reward the mayors and municipalities that will devote larger space to bicycle paths compared with their municipal population ratio. Moreover, a “blue bicycle” will be given to local governments as a symbol of that local government’s willingness to achieve bicycle mobility.
