Beijing-Shanghai in 4 Hours by Train!
02 December 2010
On April 18, 2008, the fastest railway track project kicked off in China.
The tracks will cover 1, 318 Km, connecting two of the biggest cities in China, Beijing and Shanghai, where over 135,000 workers have been employed for its realization.
The Ministry of Railways, Wang Yongping, said the project has cost a total of $ 33.29 billion and incorporates the latest high-speed railway technologies.
In more detail, the tunnel design and construction allow trains to go in both directions at up to 350 km/h at the same time, safely. Moreover, the first six-line high-speed railway bridge in the world will be built along the track, in Nanjing. The bridge will be 336 m long and will support the train’s speed of around 300 Km/h.
The new tracks will serve seven provinces of the eastern coast, where the one-fourth of the Chinese population lives. Services both for passengers (80 million in one direction per year) and for cargo transport (using the existing passenger routes) will be strongly improved.
Trains will reach speeds higher than 400 Km/h and cover the distance in 4 hours, instead of the current 10 hours.
The track will be opened to traffic next year and is only a part of the 13,000 km of high-speed railway the country plans to build by 2012.
