Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) Project
16 July 2010
A consortium of Kenyan and Dutch based companies conceived the idea of building a wind farm in Kenya, this project is now being realized with the collaboration of several European partners.
The wind farm will be located near the Lake Turkana over an area of 66,000 ha. On this site a Venturi effect will be used to accelerate winds which are guaranteed by the mountains Kulal to the North and Nyiru to the South. Moreover, the extremely low rainfall makes this area perfect for this type of plant.

Using the latest wind turbine technology, this plant will add 30% or more to the total existing installed capacity available in Kenya.
In detail, the plant will be constituted by 353 Vestas V52 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 850 KW. The power production starts in June 2011 and is expected to reach full production by July 2012 providing 300 MW of clean power. The produced power will be distributed through the existing national grid.
