The First Hydrogen Power Plant Become Operational at Porto Marghera (Venice)
23 July 2010
On the 12th of July the World’s first hydrogen power plant was officially opened in the industrial area of Porto Marghera, near Venice.
The plant, built by Enel, will produce 16 megawatts of power, providing power for approximately 20,000 households. The company announced that the power plant will also save 17,000 tons of CO2 emissions compared to a coal plant.
Hydrogen a by-product from chemical processes occurring in the near-by petrochemicals site is brought to the establishment by 4km of specially built pipelines. This strategy permits Enel to overcome the problem of the large amount of energy required to produce this gas.
Although, hydrogen as a source of electricity generation cannot be considered competitive in comparison to traditional hydrocarbons, costing about five times more than power produced from coal, the plant still represents an interesting example of application industrial ecology principles.
