Transgreen: a Network to Transport Solar Energy From North Africa to Europe
14 July 2010
North Africa is on its way to becoming one of the most significant exporters of solar energy.
On the 5th of July in Paris, 12 companies, under the leadership of French energy giant EDF, launched the first phase of TransGreen project, with the aim to build an underwater network of electrical cables to carry solar energy from North Africa to Europe.
During first phase, which runs until 2012, the consortium will carry out a feasibility study, to examine the technical, industrial, economic, regulatory and institutional project’s aspects.
TransGreen will deliver part of the energy generated by the Desertec project to Europe; a German plan to use solar power in the Sahara to cover 15 per cent of Europe’s power requirements by 2050, reducing the use of fossil fuel and CO2 emission.
The initiative is part of the Mediterranean Solar Plan (SMP) proposed by the Union for the Mediterranean (UPM) and will work in close contact with the authorities of the involved countries and the European Commission.
