New EU Organic Logo and Labelling System
30 June 2010
From the 1st of July, 2010, the new European Union logo for organic products will become mandatory for all Member States. Following the rules stipulated in the EU organic farming regulations, the logo will provide consumers with complete confidence that what they're buying underwent a strict certification process, which both farmers and food processors must comply to.
When the logo is used, it should be accompanied by an indication of where the agricultural raw material comes from. Other national and local labelling can be placed on the product when it is sold in other EU Member States other than that of origin.
The "Euro-leaf", logo is the winning idea of a German student who took part in the contest promoted by the European Union. A jury of experts examined the 3500 proposed logos, narrowing them down to three finalists then published on the EU website, where nearly 130,000 people voted for them.

More information on the logo and a user manual can be found in the European Union website devoted to Organic Farming."
