The Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)
08 June 2010
To Effectively Compare Energy Consumption A new important tool for the energy sector is now available: the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), a shared index to evaluate Energy Consumption. The PUE is now recognised by competent authorities in the US, Europe and Japan.
This was possible thanks to the efforts of The Green Grid, a global consortium including the US Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency (which is in charge for Energy Star Certifications). The consortium is dedicated to developing and promoting energy efficiency for data centers and business computing ecosystems.

PUE had been so far used voluntarily in order to evaluate energy consumption and needs, but after the standardisation of the index it can now be used officially by all data centers and become a powerful comparison tool.
The PUE is determined by dividing the amount of power entering a data center by the power used to run the computer infrastructure within it and is expressed as a ratio with overall efficiency improving as the quotient decreases.

After calculating the PUE, the process can be officially registered. It is also possible to submit the resulting PUE and ask for certification.

The guideline to PUE can be downloaded from the official The Green Grid website:"
