Earth Day 2010 - 40th Anniversary
01 April 2010
17-25 April It was on April 22, 1970 that the first Earth Day was born. The aim of the movement, a protest which took place in the USA with the participation of 20 million people, was to ask politicians to consider the issue of environment degradation in the national agenda. That day marked also the birth of what is now considered the modern environmental movement, since it was the first event able to unite people who, thus far, had been fighting for the environment in small groups and associations.

Thirty years later Earth Day 2000 moved the focus to a more specific problem connected with environmental pollution: earth warming and climate change. Moreover, thanks to the help of a new very important means, the World Wide Web, the event was able to involve 5,000 environmentalist groups and hundreds of millions of people in 184 countries.

After 40 years the movement is still very strong and is organising a series of events for the Earth Day 2010 celebration week, which will be held from April 17 to 25. People are invited to take action in first person by volunteering in projects held in schools, parks, beaches and forests with focus on climate change solutions such as tree planting, energy efficiency retrofits, water protection, urban gardens and forest restoration."
