Milan Subway Running on Solar Energy
24 May 2010
The First Case in Europe Combining public transport and renewable energy is a winning strategy to improve the sustainable development of a big city. Milan subway is such a case, as it reduced the use of fossil fuel becoming the only example in Italy and Europe of a subway partially powered by solar energy.

10% of the energy powering line 1 (the red line) of Milan Metro comes in fact from a solar power station of 23,000 m2 of photovoltaic panels installed on the roof of a depot of Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM). The aim is to reduce the energy consumption by 14 million kWh per year.
Since its activation at the end of November 2009, the solar power station has succeeded in cutting down 70 tons of CO2 emission.

The solar energy plant implementation had no costs for ATM, but was entirely financed by Dedalo E.S.Co. S.p.A., which will recover its investment through the energy account.
