Roadmap 2050 for a Low-Carbon Economy in Europe
14 May 2010
The European Climate Foundation (ECF), an organisation funded in 2007 in order to promote the development and implementation of climate and energy policies in Europe, launched a new project called Roadmap 2050, which aims at providing a tool to advance discussion on decarbonisation of the power sector and the broader economy.

By examining four scenarios of CO2 emissions reduction, the study demonstrates how a zero-carbon power sector could be technically feasible and economically viable. The solutions proposed are in line with Europe’s long-term climate policy and energy security commitments, in particular with the goal of reducing the emission of greenhouse gases by 80-95% by 2050. The four scenarios take into account different renewable energy use rates, up to 40%, 60%, 80 and 100%. Supply other than from renewable energy should be achieved through the use of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and nuclear.

The research carried out by Roadmap 2050 is based on extensive technical, economic and policy analyses conducted by five leading organizations in the field (Imperial College London, KEMA, McKinsey & Company, Oxford Economics, and the Office of Metropolitan Architecture) with the involvement of utilities, transmission operators and NGOs.
