Eternit Free
17 November 2010
Asbestos is a very hazardous material to human health and, although is banned in Italy, it is estimated that it is still the cause of 2000 deaths per year (other estimates report 4000 deaths). Over the past 40 years it has been used for many things, such as: insulating buildings, roofs, boats, and trains; but also used to make: tiles, floors, pipes, paint, flues, water tanks, as well as cars and many other applications.

Reclaiming and disposing of asbestos structures is expensive (about 15-35 € per sqm), but needs to be carried out. In this framework, the Provincia Eternit Free project, promoted by AzzeroCO2 and Legambiente, aims to inform people about the problem. Besides this, the goal of this campaign is also to implement a program that combines the promotion of solar energy, asbestos reclamation, and a reduction in electricity bills. This will be done, for instance, when replacing asbestos structures with PV systems.

The PV systems that have already replaced asbestos cement structures so far amount to almost 100 MW of power, for a total surface of 925thousand sqm, half of which range between 20 and 200 kWp. Therefore, replacing an asbestos cement roof with a PV system, yields on an average 4,400 € per year and, as a result, 88,000 € in 20 years, which is the foreseen duration of this incentive, called, conto energia scheme (MD 06/08/2010)”.
