An Off-shore Port in the Adriatic Sea!
08 October 2010
The Italian minister of Infrastructure, Altero Matteoli, the minister of Public Administration and Innovation, Renato Brunetta and the President of the Venice Port Authority, Paolo Costa, have announced plans for the new port of Venice…an off-shore port!
This project will be the first off-shore harbor structure realized in the Mediterranean Sea. It has been elaborated by one of the most important engineering companies of the world, the Halcrow English Company.
The new port will be built at the Malamocco inlet, 8 nautical miles from the Lido costal line and anchored at a depth of 20m. A total of 1.3 billion euro and 5 years will be required in order to be completed.
Why a port off-shore? The goal is to guarantee the maritime commercial traffic, whilst at the same time to safeguard the particular geophysical structure of the Venice Lagoon.
In particular, the idea to move the traffic of oil out of the Lagoon, and revitalize the economy of Venice is most prominent. Moreover, the dismissed industrial areas of Montefibre and Syndial will be recovered for harbor aims."
