Europe's Renewable Energy Plans for 2020 - What Is the situation?
29 October 2010
"The EU climate and energy package has three main goals for 2020: reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20 %; improving energy efficiency by 20%; and generating 20 % of energy consumption from renewable energy. In order to support the renewable energy objective, each Member State is requested to submit plans (NREAPs) detailing how they will reach their individual targets" is cited on the official EEA website, but what is the current situation? Recently the Energy Research of the Netherlands, in collaboration with the EEA, has published a new document on this issue. In fact, by 30 June 2010, Member States were obliged to submit National Renewable Energy Action Plans (NREAPs) to the European Commission. Besides this, the countries also had to underline how they expect to meet their 2020 renewable target with a special focus on the technology mix they planned to use and the trajectory they intend to follow.

The report contains data collected from the 19 countries who have so far submitted this information: Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Two new countries have been added from the previous edition of 10 September 2010: Romania and the Czech Republic.

The document presents the country by country situation and then analyses data by the type of energy. There are also two chapters devoted to "renewable electricity in transport" and "other biofuels in transport".

The report is a work in progress and it will be revised in the period to come, possibly until all NREAPs have been released. At every update of the document it is possible that additional graphs, tables or indicators will be added.
