World's Largest Offshore Wind Farm is Now on Working!
06 October 2010
In the world effort to increase energy production from renewable resources, for UK appears naturally to exploit wind and waves energy, given its geographic conformation.
The Thanet Wind Farm, opened on the 23th of September, marks a significant step on this road. The plant is the largest offshore wind farm in the world with 100 turbines spread over 35 km2 in the North Sea, 7.5 miles off the coast of Foreness Point, Margate.
The wind farm will be capable, if winds are high enough, of generating up to 300 megawatts of electricity – enough to power over 200,000 homes or a small city.
The farm construction started at the end of 2008 and required a total investment of around £880 million.
However the UK dash for increase wind energy production goes on, another offshore facility, the London Array, even larger, is indeed under construction.
