Shaoxing Reduces Its Textile Production!
22 September 2010
The local Government of Shaoxing (Zhejiang Province in Eastern China), the most important city in China for its textile production, decided to reduce its total production by 5% (710 million meters of textile) by September 15, with the aim to reduce emissions, pollution and save energy.
The Shaoxing textile production accounts for one third of the total Chinese annual production, but this industry has a great impact on the environment. The water used in textile dyeing amounted to 200 million tons last year. The waste water is highly polluted by organic compounds in particular, whilst the energy consumption of the “textile town” is nearly twice the average consumption of Zhejiang Province.
This effort, which should have a significant economic impact, shows us that China is fully committing itself towards reducing its impact on the environment and improve its technology. However, as Sun Yunyao, head of Shaoxing County said, it is also necessary to work towards the promotion of the upgrading of the textile industry by introducing environmentally friendly textile printing and dyeing technology.
