10 million Car Parking Spots for Electric Vehicles by 2020 in China
14 February 2011
electric_parkRecently, it has been said that in 2009 China overtook the United States as the world's biggest auto market and by 2012 Beijing alone will have 7 million vehicles on the road. Of course there are huge environmental issues linked to this fact amongst which, air pollution, emissions, traffic problems and so on. It is also true that China has been focusing its research on electric vehicles and their application. In particular, China's Minister of Science and Technology was quoted last October as saying the country's production of electric vehicles could reach 1 million units by 2020.

Now however, it is time to put in to practice the concept of sustainable mobility and decrease the environmental concerns. After the incentives on electric vehicles the Chinese government is said to be looking to prepare at least 10 million car parking spots for electric vehicles by 2020. Wang Dazong, president of Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co (BAIC), recently said "The government is working on a plan -- and I think it will be announced very, very soon -- which basically expects to achieve 10 million parking spaces or more for electric cars over the next 10 years". Wang also said consumers can now get incentives worth 120,000 yuan ($18,170) to purchase an electric car in 10 to 20 cities.

This is very good news for the urban sustainability and a good example for all: good job China!
