Venice: STOP Non Biodegradable Bags.
05 January 2011
On November 23rd Venice Municipality decided to fight against polythene bags:

Gianfranco Bettin and Carla Rey (with a proxy given by Ambiente e città sostenibile, e Commercio, tutela dei consumatori e qualità urbana) have approved an agreement protocol with the consumer association to block the distribution of non biodegradable bags for the transportation of the goods from the 1st of July 2011.

The deliberation draws on the financial law of 2007 which, in agreement with the Kyoto protocol for the reduction of greenhouse gasses, planned an experimental program that was realized to enforce the prohibition of non biodegradable bags that was planned as from January the 1st 2010, but has now been extended until January the 1st 2011.

This is part of a campaign called “campaign of the 4 R’s”: Refuse (disposable), Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. To assist this change, from November a communication campaign is in progress, and which will continue over the next few months, aiming to educate people and to promote this initiative in schools, markets, shopping centers and though communications on websites and social media.
