In 2008 the EU established the European Maritime Day, to be celebrated on May 20 each year, in order to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy marine environment on the economy and quality of life for the whole European continent. For this year’s edition the European Commission will be also hosting a European Maritime Day Stakeholder Conference in partnership with the Italian Government, to be held on May 19-20 in Rome. The conference will focus on sea-related cross-policy issues and recent progresses in the implementation of the Integrated Maritime Policy, with regard to maritime governance, the development of coastal regions and a sustainable use of ocean resources." |
