Forests to Become Carbon Net Sources Instead of Sinks
20 April 2009
The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) released on April 17, 2009, a document entitled "Adaptation of Forests and People to Climate Change - A Global Assessment".
The report, authored by 35 of the world’s top forestry scientists, warns that the critical role of forests as massive "sinks" for absorbing greenhouse gases is "at risk of being lost entirely" to climate change-induced environmental stresses that threaten to damage and even decimate forests worldwide.

The document is being officially presented and discussed at the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) session taking place from April 20 to May 1 at the UN Headquarters in New York City.
Providing the first global assessment to date of the ability of forests to adapt to climate change, the report is expected to play a key role in this week’s UNFF discussions.
