New Hybrid Power Plant
29 April 2009
On April 21, 2009, Chancellor Angela Merkel laid the foundation stone of a new hybrid power plant in the city of Prenzlau, Germany. The plant should be ready in 2010 and will be able to exploit renewable energies in an innovative way.

The Prenzlau plant will produce electric energy from three 2MW conventional wind turbines. The innovation will consist in the possibility of converting the excess of electric energy produced in windy days into hydrogen, thanks to electrolysis. When needed, hydrogen could then be mixed with biofuels and either be burnt in the power plant to produce energy or sold as clean fuel for transport.

The plant could be an important step towards the goal of overcoming the scarce reliability of energy sources, which is the main problem with renewable energies. In this plant in fact, an advanced management system will decide how to use various renewable sources according to their availability, avoiding wasting a valuable resource when the network is not able to absorb it."
