Making Photovoltaics "Double Green"
06 February 2009
PV CYCLE The use of PV modules for the production of electric energy is already a green option: the sun is a virtually endless source and the process generates no greenhouse gas emissions.

Nevertheless, the PV industry is becoming aware of the need of creating truly sustainable energy solutions that take into consideration the environmental impacts of all stages of the product life cycle, from raw material sourcing through end-of-life collection and recycling.
For this reason the PV CYCLE association was founded in July 2007 in order to implement the commitment of the photovoltaic industry to take responsibility for PV modules throughout their value chain.

PV CYCLE can so far count on 36 members, coming from Europe, USA and Japan, and representing around 70% of the European PV market. They all embrace the concept of producer responsibility and have come together to support research, thus promoting the development and implementation of recycling technologies and collection methods in order to minimize the environmental impacts measured on a life-cycle basis and the associated costs, and maximize the recovery of materials for use in new products.
