The World's Largest Solar Power Tower Plant
04 May 2009
The world's largest solar power tower has recently started its production near Seville, Spain.

The PS20 plant, built by the Spanish company Abengoa, runs on the same CSP technology as the previous smaller plant of the same kind, PS10, which has been installed in 2007 and is successfully operating in the same location.

PS20 consists of a solar field made up of 1,255 mirrored heliostats designed by Abengoa Solar. Each heliostat has a surface area of approximately 120 m2 and reflects the solar radiation it receives onto the receiver, located on the top of the 162 m high tower, producing steam which is converted into electricity generation by a turbine.
During its trial testing the solar tower PS20 produced even more power than expected. Its official power capacity is 20 megawatts, enough to provide renewable energy for 10,000 households.
According to Abengoa's calculations, the plant could prevent over 12,000 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. If combined with PS10, which generates 10 megawatts of power, the double plant can become an amazing renewable energy force."
