Waste Management and Resource Conservation - EU Policies and Case Studies

The lecture focuses on waste management and related resource conservation issues with particular reference to some main waste streams produced by the Primary and Secondary Industry.
The lecture is organized according two sections.
In the first one, an overview on waste production and management in European Union is presented and the relevant EU policies discussed. The following sub-sections are illustrated: introduction, EU policies, waste generation, waste transportation, waste treatment and disposal, waste recycling, specific waste streams management (mining waste, metallurgical waste, waste from thermal power plants, construction and demolition waste, etc.).
In the second section some relevant case studies are presented and discussed: coal fly ashes, coal desulfurization gypsum, granite waste, red mud from alumina production.
