21 September 2011 |
There is a new project currently undergoing aimed to link economic, social and environmental sustainability in a sensitive area: harbors.
APICE (Common Mediterranean strategy and local practical Actions for the mitigation of Port, Industries and Cities Emissions) is a project financed by the European program for territorial Cooperation MED 2007/2013, which kicked off in July 2010 and will conclude December 2011. It is developed in 5 pilot areas of 4 Med Countries and involves the territories of Venice, Marseille, Thessaloniki, Genoa and Barcelona. The project's conclusions will be delivered to policymakers to help integrate existing urban master plans and port investments in order to implement the sustainable development of ports. In addition, they will be used to support eco-friendly changes in shipping practices and to improve the measures for air pollution mitigation adopted by the involved ports. The final goal is to push port authorities and stakeholders to concretely contribute through voluntary agreements, in the medium term, to reducing emissions and improve the sustainability of the harbors with more attention to the environment. |
