China is Cutting its Carbon Intensity
23 January 2013

non_co2_ridAccording to recent data provided by the National Development and Reform Commission, China appears to be in line with its emissions reduction target.

Within the 12th 5-year plan period (2011-2015) China expects to cut its carbon intensity by 17% compared to 2005 values. Carbon intensity is the emission of greenhouse gases per unit of GDP and in 2012 the reduction achieved was more than 3.5%, thus exceeding the annual target.China has also set up emission reductions plans on the longer term, that could lead to curb carbon intensity up to 40-45% by 2020.

To support such an ambitious plan, the country will need huge investments both in the energy efficiency and in the renewable energy fields. In addition, pilot carbon trading schemes have already started in two Chinese provinces (Guangdong and Hubei) and five major cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing and Shenzhen), as additional tools in the fight against greenhouse gas emissions.
