CI Convenes First-ever Summit for Sustainability in Africa

ssafricaThe African continent is home to a billion people and the number keeps growing along with their demand for food, water and energy, making sustainability a key challenge. The inaugural Summit for Sustainability in Africa was held in Gaborone, Botswana, on May 24-25, 2012, hosted by the Botswana government and Conservation International.

For the first time the heads of state of several African nations shared the floor and also a vision for a more sustainable future. The President of the Republic of Botswana, Lt. Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama, was the keynote speaker, joined by representatives from Liberia, Rwanda and Namibia. Delegations form Mozambique, Ghana, Gabon, Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania also participated.

The agenda was developed around key topics such as integration of natural capital value into national and corporate accounting and planning, building social capital and reducing poverty and, finally, a very important issue for these countries, building the knowledge, capacity and policy networks to promote leadership and increase momentum for change.
