RIO +20 Conference: June 20th-22nd
17 May 2012
rio20This year marks a very important date in sustainable development discussions as Rio +20 Conference will be held as follow up of the debate started in 1992. Twenty years ago, in fact, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), most commonly known as The Earth Summit, took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

During that Conference, sustainable development was recognized as the aim of political agendas, through the adoption of important documents, e.g. the Rio Declaration and the Agenda 21, by participating countries. The latter is an action plan drafted with the aim of addressing and rethinking economic growth to make it more sustainable from both the social and the environmental point of view. Moreover two important treaties were undersigned at the 1992 Rio Summit, i.e. the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Rio +20 Conference, organized in the same month and city of the first one, will be an important time to understand what has been achieved in the past two decades and to focus on two main themes: how to build a green economy taking care of developing countries, and how to improve the international coordination for sustainable development.

Please find more detailed information in the official website for the conference.
