Used Cooking Oil Helps the Bio-plastic Production
26 September 2012
usedoilsWaste cooking oil is another of many examples showing us how our waste can be a new resource.

Recently a new research presented at the Society for General Microbiology in Warwick, UK, proves how waste cooking oil can be helpful in the process of bio-plastic creation. Usually the bio-plastic production is very costly due to the "raw materials" employed, which are microbes and glucose. Replacing the latter with waste cooking oil allows to reduce the cost of the process thus making bio-plastic manufacturing more convenient.

The economic profit is not the only good reason to promote the use of waste cooking oil. This solution would decrease the amount of a kind of waste that is usually very difficult to treat. At the same time the increase of bio-plastic use instead of traditional plastic would reduce the amount of non-degradable waste and therefore help to solve a crucial environmental issue. Moreover, bio-plastic has many other possible applications, such as in the medical field, as microcapsules for drug delivery or as implants.

Finally the research also shows that bio-plastic's quality is high, therefore it is desirable that this innovation can soon find a stable place in the market.
