Venice Launches a New Sustainable Public Lighting
16 March 2012

VE_street_lampThe Municipality of Venice has recently launched a renovation program which will make the public lighting of the city more environmentally friendly.

In the Venice city center and in the main island of the lagoon all the street lamps will be replaced with LED technology, while the "bricole" (the wooden piles that mark the canals in the Lagoon) will be equipped with photovoltaic self-supply systems managed by remote control. Also the lamps on the bridge connecting Venice with the mainland will be substituted in order to reduce light pollution.

The works will be carried out by a group of companies (Citelum SA, Gemmo SpA and Consorzio Cooperative Costruzioni Soc. Coop.), that won a dedicated call for tender earlier this year and will manage the Venice public lighting system in the next 9 years.

The savings in electric energy consumption are expected to be up to 6.500.000 KWh per year, with a consequent CO2 emission reduction of 4.500.000 Kg. At the same time the management costs paid yearly by the municipality will be reduced from 9 million Euros to 6.7 million.
