Vertical Forest: Two Green Towers in Milan
22 June 2012

verticalforestBosco Verticale (vertical forest) is one of the projects approved and developed in the framework of the 2015 World Expo organized by the city of Milan, whose theme is "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life".

The project provides for the integration of 20.000 plants (100 different species) and 900 trees in the facades of two residential towers, 76 m and 110 m high, currently being built in a redeveloped area of Milan, Italy. The vertical urban ecosystem created would cover, if placed horizontally, 10.000 m2.

Using trees and photovoltaic systems, energy consumption is expected to be reduced by 30%. Moreover the plants ability to capture particulate matter will help reduce its concentration in the internal spaces. Species to be planted have been carefully selected and their irrigation, using grey water produced in the building, will be completely centralized.

During the past week the first tree was planted in one of the terraces, while the entire construction site should close by the end of 2012.
