Zero Energy House
14 January 2013

ecohouse_defIs it possible to build a house able to produce enough energy for self-consumption ? There are many good examples of this kind of buildings worldwide, especially among firms and industries, while the residential sector is still lagging behind. While there are many houses with high energy efficiency and low consumption, only a few can be considered "zero energy".

The first Italian energetically self-sufficient house has been recently built in Ancona (Marche Region, Italy) by Energy Resource S.p.a. This is an enterprise that has been working in the green energy field (renewables, energy efficiency and energy systems integration) since 2006 and that has achieved several good results such as this first example of Zero Energy and Zero Impact House.

By means of the Smart Energy System, the energy produced through photovoltaic and geothermal systems is directly used in the house. Moreover, the building materials are carefully chosen, with an eye not only to the efficiency aspects, but also to the LCA (life cycle assessment) approach, thus bearing in mind that building materials can have strong impacts in terms of resource use and waste production.

The house also features a continuous recycling of air, with a filtration system that aims to keep the heat from the outgoing flow and that ensures the quality of the fresh incoming air. Beside these technological innovations, other small improvements are studied to make the Zero Energy house a replicable and successful project.
