In light of the weather condition typical of the area, it is no surprise that the largest concentrating solar power (CSP) plant was recently put into operation near Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
It is estimated that the 100 MW of power produced by the plant can satisfy the energy demand of 20.000 houses. This very high level is possible thanks to the use of 258.048 parabolic mirrors and 768 solar concentrating collectors covering a surface of 2,5 square Kilometers. To maximize the steam generation's efficiency a booster fuelled by natural gas is also used.
It is predicted that the energy produced by the plant will save more than 175.000 tons of CO2 emissions each year.
This is just one example of the many solar power plants projects being developed in the country, which is trying to meet the rising energy demand with a more sustainable, diversified and balanced energy mix, still heavily dependent on fossil fuels.
