Third ENEA Report on Energy Efficiency in Italy
12 February 2014

On February 6, the third Annual Report on Energy Efficiency by the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) was officially presented in Rome.

rapporto_ENEAThe report provides a complete overview of the measures taken in the building and construction, industry, transport and agriculture sectors, with related economic evaluation and energy saving.

According to the report, in 2012 Italy saved approximately 73.000 GWh, nearly 30% more than in 2011, reaching 60% of the 2016 energy efficiency target. The sectors that most contributed to this achievement are industry and the residential sector, which together account for the 80% of the reductions.

In the industrial sector the improvements result from the adoption of more advanced technologies, high efficiency electric engines, heat recovery from production processes, etc. In the residential sector a vast increase in restoration projects has been driven by the 55-65% tax deduction system, which applies to the expenses for the refurbishments that improve thermal production efficiency and building insulation. ENEA, as the institution in charge of receiving the tax deduction applications, accepted more than 1.500.000 requests since the launch of the program in 2007.

The report is a tool supporting the development of energy policies in Italy and aims to start a planning process in line with European directives. By monitoring and evaluating Italian policies on this topic, the report will be used to adjust decision-making tools to achieve increased effectiveness.

The report can be downloaded from the ENEA Energy Efficiency website (only Italian version)
